WHAT TO SEE IN MAKARSKA
WHAT TO SEE IN MAKARSKA
You came on vacation and now you are thinking, how can you spend those precious days off? Here are a few suggestions on what you can see in Makarska.
BIOKOVO MOUNTAIN
Biokovo is the second-highest mountain range in Croatia, and its highest peak is Sveti Jure (Saint George), at 1762 m. The 196 km2 of its area is protected as a nature park with over 1,500 plant and animal species, some of which are endemic. An integral part of Biokovo Nature Park is Botanical garden Kotišina, which is located on the coastal slopes of the mountain slope above the village Kotišina, at an altitude of 350-500 meters. The garden was founded by Dr. Fra Jure Radic (1920-1990), a Franciscan priest and scholar, with the purpose of scientific research and monitoring, protection, conservation, and popularization of the flora of Biokovo.
OBSERVATORY AND ASTRO PARK
In the center of the Makarska, just 50m from the seafront and 100m from the beach on the hill called Glavica and surrounded by a ring of pine trees, you can visit local Observatory. It is open in summertime (01.06.-30.09.) from Monday to Saturday from 21.00 – 23.30. Kids can also have fun at Astro park solemnly opened in 2017, as a part of the observatory project, which was implemented in the existing memorial “Revolution”, the memorial center of WW II. Observatory, Astro park, and Monument create unique cultural, educational, recreational and tourist complex.
ST. PETER’S PENINSULA
Makarska was built around a natural port protected by the charming peninsula of Saint Peter and cape Osejava. St. Peter’s Lighthouse was built in 1884 and you easily reach it by walking. This is a relaxing location where you can sit on bench in the early evening and watch the sun go down.
